Sci-GaIA will be present at the ICT2015 event – Lisbon, Portugal / October 20-22, 2015

Sci-GaIA joined forces with two other H2020 projects focusing on e-Infrastructures for research and education, TANDEM and MAGIC in order to have a strong presence at the major ICT2015 event organized by the European Commission, with a booth and a networking session,.

Sci-GaIA addresses the Science Gateway and e-Infrastructure policy development and international cooperation aiming at promoting connectivity, global e-Infrastructure services and at identifying applications targeting developing regions. TANDEM (TransAfrican Network Development) aims at making possible for researchers and academics to contribute with peers around the world to the socio-economic development of the West and Central African region. MAGIC (Middleware for collaborative Applications and Global Virtual Communities) seeks to establish a set of agreements for Europe, Latin America and other participating World Regions, aiming at creating a marketplace of services and real-time applications for international and inter-continental research groups. The three projects are working to ensure that the wider scientific community in Europe and further afield are part of a truly connected world.

GIIISC Booth: Global ICT Infrastructures for International Scientific Collaboration

At the booth, Sci-GaIA, TANDEM and MAGIC will run the following demonstrations:

  • Sci-GaIA booth will demonstrate how African scientists can use Science Gateways, access remote data and promote access to their open data and how NRENs can set up secure access to international research e-Infrastructures.
  • MAGIC booth will demonstrate the use of applications running on its collaborative platform, showing how these real time services foster and promote scientific collaboration between international research groups.
  • TANDEM booth will give concrete scientific examples in the field of tele-detection.

Visitors of all three booths will be informed on the benefits of global scientific collaboration. The demonstrations will actively involve visitors in using various applications and services: collaborative platforms and science gateways. Demonstrations will be backed up by supporting materials such as videos, posters, leaflets and give-aways and online meetings with world-wide researchers. Project partners will be on hand to fully engage with visitors and outline the benefits that each project provides to the ERA.

Networking session: Towards global research e-Infrastructures for 2020 and beyond

Sci-GaIA, TANDEM and MAGIC will also host a short networking session during ICT 2015 entitled “Towards global research e-Infrastructures for H2020 and beyond”. This session will promote the cross border collaboration needed in order to develop world research infrastructures for 2020 and beyond. The three EC-funded projects will join forces in order to discuss about the development, deployment and operation of research e-Infrastructures in different regions of the world.

The networking session will constitute an open forum to share ideas, experiences, best practices and challenges around e-infrastructures related topics. Discussions will focus on: e-Infrastructure policy development and international cooperation, the importance of promoting connectivity, global e-Infrastructure services and of identifying applications tailored to specific communities and regions, the importance of establishing agreements for Europe and other World Regions aiming at creating a marketplace of services and real-time applications for international and intercontinental research groups.

The European Commission, together with the Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia are organizing the ICT 2015 – Innovate, Connect, Transform, on 20-22 October 2015 in Lisbon, Portugal.
