How to create an Identity Federation for my country
Identity Federations consist of “[…] the agreements, standards, and technologies that make identity and entitlements portable across autonomous domains” (BurtonGroup) and could indeed be a useful and attractive mechanism for supporting secure and flexible access to e-infrastructures worldwide. It is not surprising then that research and educational institutions are forerunners in the deployment of this new set of authentication and authorization mechanisms that simplify life to individual scientists, teachers and students, reducing the number of digital identities they need to create and manage to access different services. Smaller number of identities means smaller number of sites where a person must authenticate using his/her tokens (especially passwords) and leads to lower probability of successful phishing and similar attacks, as people can more easily distinguish fake and proper sites. One of the goals of the Sci-GaIA project is therefore to promote and support wider acceptance of the Identity Federation model and foster the deployment of federated services in Africa.
