Use Case Description

Africa Pharmacology Science Gateway
The main aim of the Africa Pharmacology Science Gateway (APSG) is to design, develop, test, implement and evaluate a concept for cost-effective virtual e-infrastructure for African medical science collaboration (e-science) focusing on biomedical and pharmacological sciences and clinical trials for improving African healthcare.

The specific objectives of the APSG are to: (i) make accessible tools for research and training in a manner that will ensure vibrancy in the North-Soutgh and South-Soutgh pharmacology research; (ii) provide an e-platform which will remove/reduce physical barriers in research collaboration across Africa; (iii) promote South-South collaboration, thus harvest of knowledge & technology acquired over years of North-South collaboration; (iv) build critical mass of pharmacology research leaders, and (v) build research capacity through training and mentoring of post-docs and middle career scientists to become independent research leaders.

e-Infrastructure Services Exploited

The main outcome of the use case is a series of JSR 168/286 standard-based “portlets”, which have been integrated in the Africa Grid Science Gateway based on the Catania Science Gateway Framework.

For running APSG jobs, the Africa Grid Science Gateway is connected to Grid and Cloud resources belonging to the Africa & Arabia Regional Operation Centre.

Current Implementation of the Use Case

Africa Pharmacology Science Gateway, Code repositories (ClustalW2, G-HMMER, GROMACS)
