Use Case Description

Integration of WRF in a Science Gateway
The use case aims at integrating the Weather Research and Forecasting Model (WRF) in a Science Gateway to be (primarily) used by the WIMEA-ICT project and exploiting the High Performance Computing (HPC) resources at the Dar es Salaam Institute of Technology. Weather information is vital for decision making in various domains, such as agriculture, disaster management, aviation, fishing, energy, mining, construction, defense, water resources, health, etc., and WRF is a next-generation mesoscale numerical weather prediction system designed for both atmospheric research and operational forecasting needs .

e-Infrastructure Services Exploited

The main outcome of the use case is a JSR 168/286 standard-based “portlet”, which will soon be integrated in the Africa Grid Science Gateway.

For running WRF, the Africa Grid Science Gateway is connected to a FutureGateway API Server – developed in the context of the INDIGO-DataCloud project – which seamlessly executes jobs on local, Grid and Cloud resources belonging to the Africa & Arabia Regional Operation Centre. Most of the jobs submitted by the members of the WIMEA-ICT project will run on the HPC cluster at the Dar es Salaam Institute of Technology.
