Logging in with Federated Identity Providers

federation

(Bruce Becker) #1

This forum only provides authentication via identity federations.

This forum is a service provider of the edugain federation

It is also configured to authenticate anyone in the catch-all identity federation, which has identity providers from all over the world. As wide a coverage as it is, it's not everybody ; and even then there may be some technical problems at the individual identity providers.

Individual federations outside of edugain

Individual federations can be added, especially in Africa. So far, we have :

The creation of other African federations is underway and supported by Sci-GaIA, TANDEM and MAGIC. Individual IdPs are currently contained within the Catch-All federation

I don't have an IdP at my institute

We can make you one.

Let's say you come from the University of Lesotho - which doesn't (yet) have an IdP in any federation. We can deploy one there for you, with our handy-dandy DevOps magic. All you need is a place to host it and a host certificate. Eventually, this IdP can join the catch-all federation, or a national federation.

The IdP for my region is broken

Sometimes an IdP may get decommissioned or suffer some kind of service interruption. We can't vouch for the operational state of any of the IdP's in a particular federation, but we can make ourselves available to help you contact the IdP admins and alert them to the problem. Contact us with any queries.

I've updated the original post to reflect the entry into edugain and the addition of individual federations and IdPs.

Sci-GaIA/GARR GrIDP is still using pre-transition metadata for SAFIRE - South African Identity Federation. This is slowly being phased out and is scheduled to be discontinued at the beginning of July 2017.

In the absence of up-to-date metadata, South Africa users can still log into Sci-GaIA services via eduGAIN. To do this, South African users should select "Worldwide / eduGAIN" on the first discovery page, and then select their home institution (not SAFIRE) from the second.

Information on joining SAFIRE is available at https://safire.ac.za/participants/sp/join/
